In-Circuit Programmer
PICSPeed™ IIu is the second generation of a production class programmer for most microcontrollers from Microchip Technology Incorporated.
The supported microcontrollers (PICs and dsPICs) all support a serial programming method known as in-circuit serial programming (ICSP).
That method allows programming of the device already on-board (in-circuit). Whether that device is on a socket or soldered, using this method usually makes production more productive and efficient by eliminating steps in the process.
Only a few pins are involved and it usually is very easy to make it transparent to the target application. The design can usually be done so that no I/O pin is lost on the microcontroller.
Production class programming refers to the fact that a programmer verifies the programming, by reading the device at a specified minimum and maximum voltage. These voltages are design dependent. Not doing that can often result in unexpected behavior of some units in the field. A programmer not doing can only be classified as a “prototype” or “development“ programmer.
